Today, many people describe themselves as being either “left-brained,” meaning more logical and analytical, or “right-brained,” meaning more creative and artistic. While most scientists agree that the left-brain/right-brain concept is a myth, I find it to be an easy way to describe why people are naturally drawn to certain types of work and interests.

For me, I have always considered myself more “left-brained,” something that is reflected in my career choices. I always wished I were more creative—able to paint, draw, or make music—but those talents never seemed to come naturally to me. I have always appreciated art, and rather than creating it myself, I bought it. I have a very clear sense of what I like across many different genres, and I was always searching for a creative outlet. I knew there was a creative side of me that wanted to come out and express itself.

One day, I happened to see an advertisement for a Gem and Bead Fair coming to town. It promised all kinds of beads, gems, stones, and equipment for jewelry making. I already had friends who made jewelry and had studied the healing properties of various stones and gems, so I was intrigued.

I decided to attend the Fair to see what it was all about. I have to admit, it was a bit overwhelming at first. There were so many beautiful and interesting materials that I mostly walked around and took everything in. I kept going back whenever the Fairs came to town, and I began talking more with my friends about jewelry making.

Over time, I became increasingly interested in the process. I explored different websites and tutorials that explained jewelry-making techniques in detail. Once I felt comfortable with the basics, I began purchasing supplies at the Fairs and experimenting with creating pieces of my own.

One of the most exciting parts of the process is selecting the materials for the image I have in my mind for a particular piece. Jewelry making has given me the opportunity to finally express my creative side in a way I never expected. I find the process incredibly relaxing, and I can easily spend hours creating unique pieces.

Finding the right balance of colors, textures, shapes, and materials brings me tremendous joy, especially when I see the finished piece come together. Every component is carefully hand-selected, with an emphasis on quality and beauty. I incorporate ceramic and glass beads, complementary metals as accents, and semi-precious stones chosen both for their beauty and their traditional healing properties.

Each piece I create is an expression of my personal vision, carefully assembled with intention and attention to detail. No two pieces are exactly alike. What began as a simple visit to a Gem and Bead Fair has become a meaningful creative outlet—one that has allowed me to discover and embrace a part of myself I always knew was there.
